What’s the difference between Medical and Chiropractic Doctors?  Chiropractors earn a Degree of D.C., which means Doctor of Chiropractic. Medical Doctors Earn a degree of M.D.  The schooling and testing is similar and both are qualified in diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Arena is Board Certified and Licensed by the State of Michigan.  In addition, Dr. Arena stays on top of medical, chiropractic and holistic studies and important information for his patients.

Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.

Chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort. However, patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment (as with some forms of exercise) that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours. In many cases, such as lower back pain, chiropractic care may be the primary method of treatment. When other medical conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition.

Dr. Arena assess patients through clinical examination, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging and other diagnostic interventions to determine when chiropractic treatment is appropriate or when it is not appropriate. Dr. Arena will readily refer patients to the appropriate health care provider when chiropractic care is not suitable for the patient’s condition, or the condition warrants co-management in conjunction with other members of the health care team.

“We are committed to changing lives by reducing or eliminating pain with our FDA approved new laser therapy program.” – Dr. Anthony Arena

Laser Therapy helps to biostimulate tissue, enhance repair and growth, and decrease inflammation and pain. Cellular Effects of Laser Therapy occur when photons of therapeutic laser light interact with cells. Higher adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP) levels are produced, cell membrane permeability is increased, and blood and lymphatic vessels are vasodilated. These events then lead to a cascade of beneficial effects increasing cellular energy and health. The laser appears to have significant benefit in the treatment/management of many conditions.

Cold Laser Therapy is a treatment that utilizes specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissue and will help accelerate the healing process.

Treatment is applied directly to the problem area. The tissue then absorbs the light. Damaged cells have a physiological reaction that helps promote their regeneration.

Cold Laser Therapy is considered safe, noninvasive, painless, and there’s no need for medication or other preparation. There are generally no side effects or reported adverse events.

“Simply the best treatment, I had injections scheduled and figured I’d give the laser a try. To my surprise and delight I ended up cancelling my injections!”

What You Eat May Be

This test identifies reactions to over 300 foods, chemicals and other substances associated with inflammation that are linked to chronic health problems like migraines, aching joints, fatigue, gastrointestinal disorders, eczema, hyperactivity/ADD, asthma and even obesity.

Our goal is to provide our patients with accurate, timely and dependable test results and nutritional support services. We are more than happy to advise you in choosing the appropriate test panel as well as assist you with any other questions before or after taking the test.

We have had numerous patients take this test and the results have been nothing short of remarkable.

Many of the foods that are available in restaurants and grocery stores are highly processed and contain significant amounts of sugars, pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals that are foreign to the human body. While we do not believe in “diets”, Proactive Wellness Center believe that a foundation to any plan to optimize health has to include eating “whole”, healthy foods in the proper amounts and appropriately balanced.

Further, many individuals have food sensitivities. Through food sensitivity testing, we can identify the “safe” foods and the foods that a person is sensitive to or intolerant to. Dr. Arena helps the individuals eliminate the foods that they are sensitive or intolerant to. Identifying and correcting food allergies increases the success of almost every treatment modality. Chronic symptoms can disappear, significant weigh loss may occur, and many other improvements have been reported in our office.

What is food sensitivity?
When the lining of the gut is inflamed, small fissures open between the tightly woven cells making up the gut walls. Known as leaky gut syndrome, these chinks in the gut’s armor allow bacteria and partially digested food molecules to slip out into the bloodstream where they are considered foreign invaders.

Once it spies a potential enemy, the body doesn’t hold back. The immune system attacks full throttle. White blood cells rush to surround the offending particle and systemic inflammation ensues. I’m not talking about a sore throat or infected finger. I’m talking about a hidden, smoldering fire created by the immune system as it tries to fend off a daily onslaught of food allergies. The problem is that most people eat foods they are allergic to several times a day. Meaning every time that food enters the body, the immune system whips itself into a frenzy. But because symptoms are delayed up to 72 hours after eating, a low-grade food allergy can be hard to spot.

Without diagnosis or awareness, the damage is repeated over and over, meal after meal. Eventually, inflammation seeps throughout the body, establishing an environment ripe for weight gain and chronic disease. Identifying and treating food allergies and food sensitivities is an important part of our practice. After accurate food intolerance testing and a corrective diet many patients lose notches on their belt, feel relief from arthritis symptoms have asthma symptoms improve, and most of all gain energy while decreasing hunger. These results are not unusual. We have seen dramatic effects in weight loss, inflammatory conditions like autoimmune disease, and even mood and behavioral disorders.

How does food sensitivity differ from classic food allergies?
True food allergies refer to foods that trigger the immune system to acutely produce massive amounts of the chemical histamine that leads to anaphylaxis. This potentially fatal condition causes the throat and esophagus to swell, cutting off air from the lungs, or may simply cause hives, skin rashes, and other non-life-threatening reactions. This type of reaction is called a Type I hypersensitivity reaction, caused by the degranulation of mast cells or basophils that is mediated by Immunoglobulin E (IgE).

Hair Testing Benefits Anyone Who Is Ill &

Hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA), is an analytical test which measures the mineral content of the hair. The sampled hair, obtained by cutting the first inch and one-half of growth closest to the scalp at the nape of the neck, is prepared in a licensed clinical laboratory through a series of chemical and high temperature digestive procedures. Testing is then performed using highly sophisticated detection equipment and methods to achieve the most accurate and precise results.

Hair analysis benefits anyone who is found ill and no explanation can be found, or when the cause seems to be found but the therapy is not wholly effective. Hair Analysis opens up a whole new vista for the solving of your own particular problem by recognizing your biochemical individuality.

Hair is ideal tissue for sampling and testing. First, it can be cut easily and painlessly and can be sent to the lab without special handling requirements. Second, clinical results have shown that a properly obtained sample can give an indication of mineral status and toxic metal accumulation following long term or even acute exposure.

A HTMA reveals a unique metabolic world: intracellular activity, which cannot be seen through most other tests. This provides a blueprint of the biochemistry occurring during the period of hair growth and development. Examples:

  • Thirty to 40 days following an acute exposure, elevated serum levels of lead may be undetectable. This is due to the body removing the lead from the serum as a protective measure and depositing the metal into such tissues as the liver, bones, teeth and hair.
  • Nutrient loss from the body can become so advanced that severe health conditions can develop without any appreciable changes noted in those same nutrient levels in a blood test.
  • Symptoms of elemental deficiency can be present long before low levels can be detected in the serum.
  • Excess sodium is associated with hypertension, but adequate amounts are required for normal health.

Hair is used as one of the tissues of choice by the Environmental Protection Agency in determining toxic metal exposure. A 1980 report from the E.P.A. stated that human hair can be effectively used for biological monitoring of the highest priority toxic metals. This report confirmed the findings of other studies in the U.S. and abroad, which concluded that human hair may be a more appropriate tissue than blood or urine for studying community exposure to some trace elements.

Minerals are the “sparkplugs” of life. They are involved in almost all enzyme reactions within the body. Without enzyme activity, life ceases to exist. A trace mineral analysis is preventive as well as being useful as a screening tool for testing minerals.

Some conditions that may result or be aggravated by a mineral imbalance are:
Allergies   –   Anemia   –   Arthritis   –   Cardiovascular Disease   –   Depression   –   Digestive Disturbances   –   Diabetes   –   Emotional Problems   –   Headaches   –   Hypertension   –  Hypoglycemia   –    Hyperactivity   –   Hair Loss   –   Muscular-Skeletal Disorders   –   Prostate Disorders   –   Skin Rashes   –   Thyroid Disturbance

What can cause a mineral imbalance?
There are many factors to take into consideration, such as:
Diet – Improper diet through high intake of refined and processed foods, alcohol and fad diets can all lead to a chemical imbalance. Even the nutrient content of a “healthy” diet can be inadequate, depending upon the soil in which the food was grown or the method in which it was prepared.
Stress – Physical or emotional stress can deplete the body of many nutrients while also reducing the capability to absorb and utilize many nutrients.
Medications – Both prescription and over-the-counter medications can deplete the body stores of nutrient minerals and/or increase the levels of toxic metals. These medications include diuretics, antacids, aspirin and oral contraceptives.
Pollution – From adolescence through adulthood the average person is continually exposed to a variety of toxic metal sources such as cigarette smoke (cadmium), hair dyes (lead), hydrogenated oils (nickel), anti-perspirants (aluminum), dental amalgams (mercury and cadmium), copper and aluminum cookware and lead-based cosmetics. These are just a few of the hundreds of sources which can contribute to nutrient imbalances and adverse metabolic effects.
Nutritional Supplements – Taking incorrect supplements or improper amounts of supplements can produce many vitamin and mineral excesses and/or deficiencies, contributing to an overall biochemical imbalance.
Inherited Patterns – A predisposition toward certain mineral imbalances, deficiencies and excesses can be inherited from parents.

Even if you are not experiencing a severe problem, abnormal changes in body chemistry and nutritional deficiencies may result in early, subtle changes in the body such as:
White spots in fingernails – indicates a possible zinc deficiency
Longitudinal ridging in nails – indicates an iron deficiency
Brittle hair and nails – calcium and copper imbalance
Deep grooves across nail – calcium deficiency
Stretch marks – zinc deficiency
Lack of growth – zinc deficiency
Mood swings – possible toxic metal accumulation such as lead, mercury, or cadmium
The above indicators are early signs of metabolic disturbances and may lead to serious problems if left unchecked.

“I was really sick for several months and my primary doctors could not figure out what was wrong with me. Dr. Arena highly recommended that I get a hair test and I am so glad that I did! I had an extremely high level of arsenic in me! It ended up being my well water! I am back to normal now. Thank you Dr. Arena!”

We Offer Blood & MRI Testing

Serious medical conditions can go undetected for up to two years — without noticeable symptoms. Many problems are identified in the blood long before you actually experience symptoms or can be seen in a MRI before symptoms appears.

Certain tests, when read properly, will indicate that you are progressing towards a serious illness, such as cancer, diabetes, liver, heart, or many other diseases. A blood chemistry wellness test provides the best warning indicator. The earlier a problem is detected, the easier and more likely it is to be treatable.

You now have direct access to major clinical laboratory testing for those important blood chemistry and wellness tests and MRI tests. Many consumers are under-insured, have high deductibles, or health plans without a wellness benefit.

Dr. Arena offers the same screenings that your PCP orders for you, but they typically will not be paid by insurance companies unless you have symptoms. Furthermore, if your doctor does order these same screenings, you will most likely pay a hefty price! Dr. Arena conveniently order these screenings, allowing you to get tests at a much lower cost – making them affordable, even without insurance.
